Te Arawa

There are numerous Iwi throughout Aotearoa who have complex systems of Tikanga and Kawa and apply these principles to their health and wellbeing expressions. Te Arawa is only one Iwi of many that have developed organisations to support Iwi health potential of their descendants. The Te Arawa Waka region is within the central North Island from Maketu on the Bay of Plenty coast to the mountain of Tongariro in the south. You can read more here

In  1993 Te Arawa elders decided to form Te Papa Tākaro o Te Arawa to address the health, fitness, wellbeing and sporting needs and potential of the Iwi. You can read more here

Since that time Te Papa Tākaro o Te Arawa has implemented Iwi centric examples of utilising values in specific physical activity and activity contexts. From a Te Arawa Iwi perspective when engaging through activity Tikanga Māori values five central pillars of value-based engagement are promoted and adjusted for the environmental differences (Te Arawa engagement model 2009):
