Food sources of fructose-containing sugars and glycaemic control: systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled intervention studies

Food sources of fructose-containing sugars and glycaemic control: systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled intervention studies

This meta-analysis examined 155 controlled intervention studies assessing the effect of different food sources of fructose-containing sugars on glycaemic control in over 5,000 people with and without diabetes.

This paper reinforces that most food sources of fructose-containing sugars do not have a harmful effect on glycaemic control in energy matched substitutions for other macronutrients e.g. fresh fruit is accompanied by fibre, water and other beneficial nutrients.

The key issue is added and excessive fructose, especially sugar sweetened drinks, adding excess energy to diets.
