Event – Just Kai? Webinar #1: Food Insecurity? Food Security? What is the difference and why does it matter?

During 2020 COVID lockdowns Aotearoa saw the true extent of food insecurity within our communities. For over 50 years communities have been responding to individual families in need, assisting them with food in the form of food banks, community meals, food in schools, eating with whanau, mahinga kai & foraging, community gardens and more. Within a lockdown setting when many saw their household budgets shrink, limited socialisation and access to informal community support Foodbank lines grew showing the true extent of the Food insecurity present in our communities. Aotearoa responded with compassion and practical help. But little has changed to reverse the levels of food insecurity experienced by whānau. Many of our whānau on low incomes live in a food dependency system.

So what does a food secure community look like? And what is the difference between food insecurity & food security? How to we get there? Is it just about kai? Or is this really a conversation about income and cost of living? How do we create a system that enables all to experience food sovereignty?

Join our conversations over the next 6 months exploring how we can move forward on this together.
