Low household income is strongly associated with the likelihood of food insecurity, according to the Child Poverty Monitor 2020. Over half (56%) of children living in families receiving financial assistance don’t always have enough healthy food to eat.

The proposed expansion of Ka Ora, Ka Ako (the healthy school lunches programme) is a good example of policy that may mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on children living in food-insecure households
